wk5
- Revised part 2 hand-in requirements for Friday 5pm: visual analysis of part 1 writing (upload to blog), proposed new outline structure (google doc, shared with Jen) with main headings and brief description of content and required theoretical support material for each section (can just be bullet points).
- Note: final hand-in date changed to 5pm Friday 17 May (week 10) – please ensure you have signed the notification of change to date (hard copy in my office). As discussed this is to allow for further study and analysis of texts to better inform your writing. Suggested texts will be uploaded to the blog over the break for you to select from but please continue to search for texts yourself as these will be suggestions only; you will then critically read and analyse your selected texts, to be discussed and a written text analysis handed in at the end of week 7.
Multimedia:
- Revised hand in requirements for this week: as discussed most of you have already met the requirements for the 60sec trailer hand-in by preparing a video for your interim presentation. Therefore, you do not need to hand in another video. If you haven’t already completed a video or would like to update you interim video, please do so and upload to your blog. These can be considered as work-in-progress ‘drafts’ so do not have to be fully resolved. Please send Jen an email linking to any new video material on your blog.
Studio:
- Please ensure you re-read the brief so that you are aware of the hand-in requirements and assessment criteria. To summarise, as discussed:
- process work (drawings, models, digital and material explorations)
- scale plans and sections/elevations (1:10/1:20) – can be digital, hand-drawn, or mixed media
- 3-4 visuals conveying materiality, atmosphere, inhabitational experience (suggested number only, you need to decide how best to convey your design, however you do need 3-4 visuals for the blog archive upload but these may be a combination of rendered/drawn views and photographs of models etc)
- detail / material moment (1:1) – you must have some evidence of 1:1 material making; this may be either process work or a resolved detail for presentation (a resolved detail may also be presented in digital format, but this would be in additional to material explorations)
- video conveying your design narrative – taking us on a journey through (relevant) process and final design; this can comprise part or all of your final presentation (also consider audio)
- text: you must have a title, and you may also wish to incorporate text into your presentation/video etc. (note the text requirements for the blog archive upload also)
- Expected format for hand-in:
- blog: process work, final visuals and video
- presentation (Wednesday): presentation/video to incorporate selected process work, plans and sections/elevations, visuals, detail/materiality, and text (optional except title) in a manner that best conveys your design
- printed/on desk (Friday): selected process work (drawings/models), material explorations/detail, printed plans and sections/elevations, printed visuals
- dropboxed: plans and sections/elevations, visuals, presentation/video
- blog archive submission as per brief (details to be confirmed start of wk6)
Office hours:
Jen will have office hours over the break on Thursdays 9.30-11.30. If you can’t make it in but wish to discuss your work, please email within this same timeframe and explain where you are at and what you would like feedback on (please be as specific as possible as this will speed up the feedback process) – give directions to relevant process work on your blog (please don’t email large files).
Have a Happy Easter!

wk2: urban ramblings…
What a beautiful day it was for a ramble through the city! Starting where we finished the Feast (a fitting place for me to ramble on for a bit about the sensorial body as a research tool), we then wound our way down through the city, traversing, cutting through back alleys, even going around in circles, following our whims. We explored mainly outside spaces (possibly because the sun was shining, or maybe because we were drawn to the potential of inhabiting spaces of transition, flow and overt temporality), but sometimes peered through windows, particularly when abandoned, empty spaces caught our imaginations). As we (r)ambled along we let our thoughts ramble too. A few interesting fragments:
- There was a noticeable change in pace/people/purpose between the Cuba Street and Lambton Quay areas. Starfish started as Jive Junkies and had an early store in upper Cuba Street before opening the Willis St Starfish store, and the last pop-up store was on Lambton Quay. How has this reflected their change in target market? Who is the Starfish customer now and how do we get the ‘message’ across to them? Does Starfish need to back to its ‘roots’? Or is that preaching to the converted…?
- Could you use an existing (not vacant) space as a site? Any site can be proposed as long as there is a strong conceptual backing. Just bear in mind you must be able to measure your site (or obtain measurements) in order to produce accurate drawings and models.
- Don’t forget that the point of this pop-up store is to create a memorable/resonant experience for people – consider who those people are and how they are drawn in to engage with the experience. If you site your pop-up store in a remote or low-visibility location, how do people know it is there? Or does it become about the journey…?
- Your site could be indoor, outdoor, in-between, under, on top of…
- Some of our favourite spots on the ramble included carparks, alleyways, Marion Street (various), Cuba Street, Left Bank, Willis St market carpark, parks (Glover, Pigeon, Frank Kitts), civic square, waterfront (lots of potential sites!), area outside the Hotel Intercontinental (by the old newsagent kiosk). Other places we talked about but didn’t go to included the Cable Car, Overseas Passenger Terminal (currently under re-construction), Oriental Bay boatsheds and other spots. Most of these are outdoor spaces but consider indoor spaces too, including abandoned/empty buildings, public buildings, transport terminals (railway station, airport), and other places where people gather (bars, restaurants, clubs, halls, educational buildings, markets/supermarkets)… most importantly, consider why?
Fragments of my ramblings about rambling:
- “I confront the city with my body; my legs measure the length of the arcade and the width of the square; my gaze unconsciously projects my body onto the facade of the cathedral, where it roams over the mouldings and contours, sensing the size of recesses and projections; my body weight meets the mass of the cathedral door, and my hand grasps the door pull as I enter the dark void behind. I experience myself in the city, and the city exists through my embodied experience. The city and my body supplement and define each other. I dwell in the city and the city dwells in me.” (p. 43) – Pallasmaa, J. (2005). Eyes of the Skin. Chichester, England: Wiley-Academy.
- “By looking at rambling … space can be understood as a form of choreography, a series of performed movements … which are constructed and represented through social relations of looking and moving – exchanging, consuming and displaying. … the ramble represents a spatial configuration which describes the interpenetration of private and public.” (pp. 247-248)… “The verb “to ramble” describes incoherent movement, “to wander in discourse (spoken or written), to write or talk incoherently or without natural sequence of ideas.” As a mode of movement, rambling is unrestrained, random and distracted: “a walk … without any definite route or pleasure.”” (pp. 249-250) – Rendell, J. (2000). “Serpentine allurements”: disorderly bodies/disorderly spaces. In Borden, I. and Rendell, J. (Eds.), InterSections: Architectural Histories and Critical Theories (pp.247-268). London, England: Routledge. full text here
- “Vagabonding was his phrase … carefully self-deprecating. But it does get the pleasure of the searching right, the way you lose your sense of time when you are researching, are pulled on by whims as much as by intent… I vagabond in libraries … I follow the leads … I go and stand outside his old offices … in the summer rain like some sad art-historical gumshoe and wait to see who comes out. … I find that as the months pass I have a strangely increased sensitivity to the quality of paper.” (pp. 72-73) – de Waal, Edmund. (2010). The Hare with the Amber Eyes: A Hidden Inheritance. London, England: Vintage Books.
Have a great weekend, see you Monday!
