Notes from Gem Duncan on Film:

Key Words on Film:

– Cropping and framing – eliminate distractions unless it is otherwise specifically needed.

– Sound – adds depth, adds ambiance i.e light bulb/tv whining, more to consider, also silence is a sound and is ambient but only use it as a well considered decision.

–  temperature

– colour – minimal or vibrant. What are you trying to say

– resonance – light bulb, sound waves, glitches, silence.

– black space and white space – the space in between can evoke ambience.

– interactivity

– light – need for good lighting

– resolution and image quality – technical reflects you intentions, if you don’t intentionally want a work to look dated don’t use a resolution that evokes it.

– macro – experiment with depth of field, what happens if you frame something in such a way to doesn’t resemble what it is in reality. What doe that evoke? Shifts work towards working with space.

– editing – pace, rhythm, repetition, reflection

Edit your sound – take out anything that is distracting and not intentional

Gus van Sant

Gus van Sant – Performance element of the actors. Long shot duration for emphasis on the perfomance and also on the background. Timing is a critical part of editing. Paranoid park van Sant intentionally uses a contrast of different resolution qualities to shift perception.

Note the sound in this film – it has a beautiful depth to it
