Project 1: Popping the Plan

Aim:

To engage design in the complex dialogue between community, planning and dwelling.

Content:

Designing a ‘pop-up’ urban shelter for one of 5 identified sites around the 47 Sainsbury Road area. This zone has been designated for housing densification in the new Auckland Unitary Plan. In this group design project you are required to become acquainted with the proposed changes and make a functional shelter for community use which communicates information about Plan designations for St Lukes area, while responding to the types of concerns people have about these changes (eg. see Herald articles below).

Project Requirements:

Submission will include orthographic and perspective renderings of the Pop-Up design including a site plan, human scale/occupation and operation diagrams of the proposal. Conceptual models expressing materiality and operating structure (hinge, pivot &/or sliding mechanisms) are required as necessary to support renderings.

Assessment Criteria:

Demonstrate awareness of social (in the street, suburb & city) qualities of the site & zone.Successful provision for a defined community amenity.Attention to temporal and weathering conditions Identify the project’s contextual issues and define a theoretical approach within which a design poetic can be sustained.
