454 Research Project: This paper explores a specific design research topic chosen by the student. Spatial design processes are applied to resolve the complexities of a design research project to an in-depth level of detail and inhabitation. Students develop a design brief that formulates a critical position in relation to spatial design, establishing tangible links between theory and practice to identify design processes to generate design research response.

455 Studio Project: This paper explores a specific design topic chosen by the student. Spatial design processes are applied to resolve the complexities of a design project to an in-depth level of detail and inhabitation. Students develop a design brief that formulates a position in relation to spatial design, to identify design processes to generate a design response.

Our programme seeks to reflect on existing conditions, “but also to imagine something different – to transform rather than describe” (Rendell, 2006, p8).

Critical spatial practice “explores the operations of particular disciplinary procedures – art and architecture – while also drawing attention to wider social and political problems” (Rendell, 2006).

Project brief

You are tasked with designing your own project (for 454 based on your R&D work and 455 you will be given a site and programme) that responds to the following phases:

Phase Checklist

phase 1_brief_pre-design & concept design_ development of a design brief that formulates a critical position in relation to spatial design. Establishment of tangible links between theory and practice. Identification of processes to generate concepts and an initial design response. Consider your design process in relation to programme and site, analyse conditions of site:

  • presented at crit #1 week 5 Thursday (tbc)

phase 2_concept design address and resolve the complexities of a design project to an in-depth level of detail and inhabitation. Consider methods to radicalise your ideas, progressing from ideas to a spatial concept. How do you create a sence of place and the experience of moving through the space? What is the programme or intent of the spaces you are designing? Investergate the programme requirements in detail.

  • presented at crit #2 week 8 Thursday (tbc)

phase 3_developed design rigorous response to reviews and critiques in order to finalise major project and communicate process and design in an articulate, creative and professional way. You need to resolve how:
-The programme is sited and planning deals with inhabitation and circulation in realtion to your concept.
-Construction, structure, and materials are detailed and related to the concept.

  • presented at crit #3 week 12 Thursday (tbc)

phase 4_exposure_Consider how to represent your work for the exposure show [More information to come]

Assessment 455

[with varying emphasis respective to phases 1-3]:

  • Connection of programme and site to design – design brief
  • Design method/ process and response to site/ programme _translation from concept to design
  • formal resolution of design to detail
